Quick answer: Italian pizza is about a few simple ingredients done well. Desi pizza uses South Asian marinades and sauces, like tikka, tandoori and seekh kabab, on a cheesy base. We make both styles at Cheezious in Fawkner.
Both are good. They are just different things, and once you know what to expect, ordering gets easier.
The Italian way: simple and focused
A classic Italian pizza has a thin, airy base, a bright tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and not much else. A Margherita is the test: if the dough, the sauce and the cheese are good, you do not need anything more.
The desi way: bold and layered
Desi pizza starts from a different place. The toppings are marinated before they are cooked, so the chicken or the kababs already carry a lot of flavour. Add a creamy or chutney-style sauce and plenty of cheese, and every bite has more going on.
Common toppings are chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, seekh kabab and malai boti. Sometimes you get peppers and onion on top, often a drizzle of sauce.

What this looks like on our menu
We run both. For a classic, the cheese lover range has the Margherita and Napoletana from $12 for a small. For desi flavour, the chicken range, with tikka, tandoori and BBQ chicken, goes from $13 to $20, and the special range has creamy seekh kabab, malai boti and the Lahori Tandoori.
Which should you pick?
- New to desi flavours: start with a creamy tikka or malai boti pizza
- You like spice: try the Lahori Tandoori or Peri Peri
- You want something familiar: Margherita or pepperoni
- Feeding a mixed group: order one of each and share
The honest answer
There is no winner. A great Margherita and a great tikka pizza are both worth ordering. If you are at our counter in Fawkner and cannot decide, tell us what you normally like and we will suggest something.
